Chinese gang brought down by joint police operation in Argentina
Chinese special police officers and Argentine federal police have arrested a Chinese criminal gang called “Pixiu” in the South American country - 40 people have been detained.
Argentina's Security Minister Patricia Bullrich said at a press conference on Monday: "This is one of the most successful operations in the history of Argentina. It's also a very important action for the protection of local security and tranquility, especially to the security of Chinese people who live in the country."
In a joint operation, Chinese and Argentine police carried out raids on the criminal gang in 22 locations across the South American country last week. A total of 14 guns, 149,000 pesos and 3,700 US dollars were seized, as well as cars and drugs.
"Pixiu" has been active in Argentina for around 10 years. The gang took protection fees from local Chinese supermarket owners, warning that their lives would be at risk if they did not pay up. The leader is Chinese, but some of the gang members are from South America.
